  • SCCM will be updated

In conjuncture with the University of Illinois, CIS will be updating SCCM this week. SCCM is the software that the University uses to deploy software and other updates, and services. This update should not cause any downtime as the client software will update in the background.

Once all the UICOMP clients have been updated, CIS will host several training sessions on how to best use SCCM to deploy software that is available that you may not know about. These training sessions will be announced at a later date.

  • Phone Issues Resolved

The phone issues have been resolved by the carrier. If you are still experiencing a problem, please contact the help desk and we will do our best to assist you. Thank you, and have a wonderful weekend.

  • Intermittent Phone Issues

We are experiencing some intermittent phone issues currently. Ongoing calls are taking multiple attempts before they go through, and some calls from outside lines are not going through as well.

CIS is working with our Phone service provider to resolve the issue. We will update everyone once service has been restored. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the issue.

  • Network Downtime

On Tuesday, Sept 25th CIS will be working on the A107C network closet to add additional network devices for the new distance learning classroom. During this maintenance the Testing Room will be down. The maintenance downtime should take no long than 2 hrs, and the testing room will be back online prior to that.

  • Audio Problems in A100

Currently the vendor has been able to get 4 out of 8 mics working. 2 of the handhelds and 2 of the label mics are working. They are continuing to work on the other mics to ensure the room is fully operational as soon as possible.

  • Cyber Security Awareness Month: Personal Devices

For many of us, our electronic devices are key parts of our lives. Think of all the personal data on your phone, such as emails, contact lists and social media accounts. Your laptop probably contains even more sensitive information – saved passwords, financial documents and more.

Here are some ways to safeguard your devices:

Enable authentication (e.g. PIN, password, passphrase, fingerprint scanner); Create separate accounts or “guest” accounts for others using your computer; Don’t access sensitive websites, such as online banking, when using public WiFi; Don’t use pirated software or illegally obtained media. These cracked versions of content often have malware that can harm to your device or steal your data.

  • Cyber Security Awareness Month: Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks or scrambles files on an infected device. Payment is demanded in order for you to regain access to your files. However, there is no guarantee you will be able to access your files again. (Note that UIC does not make ransom payments.)

Ransomware often spreads as an email attachment, so be careful when clicking on links and files in emails.

If your system does become infected, it’s important that you have a good backup so you can restore your files. CIS runs a backup on all files located on the UICOMP network. At home, you can use a thumb drive or an external hard drive to back up your data.
