    Undergraduate Student Research Scientific Aide/Assistant Position Available!

    The Center for Research on Health and Aging (CRHA) is seeking to fill an undergraduate student research position.  This is a great opportunity to gain valuable research experience!  If you are smart, reliable, motivated, and eager to learn then we want you to be a part of our team! 

    What we do:

    CRHA is housed under the Institute for Health Research & Policy at UIC, where we test and disseminate evidence about how older adults can prevent disability and disease to maintain health.     As a research assistant you will take part in an exciting project at CRHA which involves testing Fit and Strong!  (an evidence-based physical activity/ health behavior change program for older adults with lower extremity osteoarthritis) to a new enhanced version of this program called Fit and Strong! Plus that also addresses diet and weight management.

    Responsibilities:                                 

    Duties as a research assistant would be:

    Assisting with program implementation at sites in Chicago  
    Recruiting, screening, and enrolling study participants
    Conducting surveys and interviews with study participants
    Entering data
    General office duties

     

    Who we want:

    We are looking for responsible, organized and dedicated undergraduates who are majoring in a health or social science discipline. The ideal candidate must commute between study sites and west campus. The student must be able to commit to at least 20 hours per week.

  • Women's Mental Health Research Assistant Position

    The Women’s Mental Health Research Program directed by Dr. Pauline Maki would like to extend an opportunity to volunteer as an undergraduate research assistant. The research project is looking at ways to better identify and treat women at risk for perinatal mental health disorders. As a research assistant, you would have the opportunity to have direct contact with research participants by conducting surveys on mental health in an OB/GYN setting. The research team is currently looking for undergraduates who can start in the summer and can give an average commitment of ten hours per week.

  • Research Assistant Position in Psychology for Fall 2014

    Dr. Stewart Shankman in the Department of Psychology is looking for undergraduate research assistants to volunteer in the Chicago Lab of Emotion and Physiology. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand your research skills before applying to graduate school!

    RA's should have flexible schedules to help with lab visits, be timely and have an interest in mood and anxiety disorders and pursuing a higher degree in Psychology. Weekend availability is strongly desired, as is experience using SPSS for data entry and working with participants. Responsibilities of an RA include assisting graduate students with lab visits, running participants through behavioral tasks and neuropsych assessments, entering data into SPSS, and generally helping around the lab.   • Honors College Research & Travel Grants (Deadline 2/26)

    A significant advantage of being in the Honors College is access to money to support your undergraduate research or other scholarly projects. Please see your faculty research advisor right away and start on your applications for several grants-in-aid, which are all due on-line Friday, February 26, 2016. All applications must be read by and supported by a letter from your research faculty advisor.

    (1) Research grants: All forms of scholarship are supported, including Capstone Projects. Maximum award is $1,000, for expenditures incurred since August 24, 2015 or anticipated for projects planned for current or planned research projects.     (2) Travel grants: Proposals will be considered for expenses associated with presentation of research at conferences (e.g., flight, hotel, poster preparation costs) up to $500. Please submit your application here: https://uic.academicworks.com/opportunities/1815

    Whether you are conducting scientific experiments, lab research, or surveys, whether you are analyzing data from field work such as participant observation or in-depth interviews, creating a set for a play, designing a building, or exploring historical archives, you may apply for funding to support your research, attend professional conferences, pay for your Research Forum poster, and so on. 

    Please read the award announcements carefully, and follow instructions for submission of rationale and methods, detailed budget and budget justification, letter of support, and so on. Submit your completed online application--include support letter--by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2016.     The Student Research Forum represents one of the finest student-run activities at UIC. It is one of the few student activities that is academic in nature and includes the entire student body; undergraduate, graduate and professional. The Forum provides a venue for students at UIC to present their scholarly efforts and is an event in which the campus celebrates the wealth of research across all disciplines carried out by the dedicated students of this campus.

    Students from all disciplines (Arts, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, among others) are invited to present their work one-on-one to Forum attendees and judges during a high-energy 3-hour session, followed by an awards ceremony. Monetary awards will be given in various categories. Research presentations are accompanied by a poster or other visual display that captures the spirit of the research work and/or highlights key features of the project.

  • Summer undergraduate intern opportunity for students in STEM fields

    There is an undergraduate internship opportunity in Dr. Krishna Reddy's laboratory this upcoming summer.  We are looking for highly motivated undergraduate students in STEM fields to assist us with ongoing NSF-funded research relating to biochar-amended soils as alternative landfill covers for enhanced methane mitigation. Duties would include: assisting with basic soil characterization and geotechnical testing; assistance with DNA extractions from soil; assistance with basic lab maintenance and sample preparation; data entry, and other miscellaneous tasks as needed.

    Duration of the internship will be from mid-May to mid-August at 20-40 hours per week.  The student will be compensated at the standard hourly rate for undergrads in the CME Dept. (~$10/hr).

    The deadline for registering for the 2016 Student Research Forum is 9:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21.  Registrations are taken on a first come, first served basis until all slots are filled.  Please note that this may mean we will run out of space prior to the March 21 deadline so we encourage you to submit as soon as possible.

    We are looking for Neuroscience/pre-med undergraduate (freshman/sophomore) research assistants who are interested in stem cell research for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease in particular. Our research lab is in the College of Medicine Research Building in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. The successful applicant will work closely with a graduate student on a research project that involves animal modeling, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy work. The applicant will commit to work-study during the school year, and devote at least 20 hours/week. Priority is given to Biology/Chemistry majors with high GPAs. Great experience for those who plan to go to Medical/Graduate school. Qualifications and requirements: work-study funds, prior research experience is preferred but not necessary. The applicant should be able to quickly learn and master new techniques, have good communication skills, as well as be mature, reliable, and organized.   • Research Assistant Volunteers Needed in Neuronal Cell Biology and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Program

  • UIC Health Professions Navigator Program: Research Training and Career Development and/or GRE/MCAT/DAT Prep Programs, Apply by 2/3 and 3/13

    The University of Illinois at Chicago Health Professions Navigator Program (UIC-HPN) is now accepting applications for two summer programs:

    1) The Research Training and Career Development Program (RTCP), a program intended for highly motivated undergraduate and graduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds. RTCP will help familiarize students with research and practice opportunities by pairing them with a mentor, or placing them in a practice site. 

    If you are an undergraduate or graduate student (from any college or university), and have an interest in pursuing a career within the health professions, you are eligible to apply! RTCP is 8 weeks long and concludes with an end of program poster presentation that family and friends are welcome to attend to learn more about your summer work! For more details on the RTCP, eligibility, program dates, or to apply, please click the link below or view the attached flyer. 

    2) GRE/MCAT/DAT Prep Program (GMDP): GMDP is designed to prepare students from disadvantaged backgrounds to be competitive applicants for graduate or professional school. In addition to a test preparation course for the GRE, MCAT, or DAT exams, participants will engage in a series of workshops that are designed to help them through the admissions process for graduate or professional school.  Juniors and seniors in college (from any college or university) – or even recent grads – who are interested in a health professions career are eligible to apply! GMDP is free of charge for accepted participants.

  • Summer Diabetes Research Program, Apply by 1/15

    The UIC Honors College, in partnership with the UIC Department of Surgery and the Department of Bioengineering, is happy to announce a new Summer Research Program. The Summer Diabetes Research Program at UIC is a ten-week summer internship for undergraduates with a focus on diabetes research.  Sponosored by the NIH NIDDK R25 training program, this program will pair students with researchers in diabetes-related projects, such as islet transplantation, islet physiology, tissue engineering, beta-cell proliferation, microfluidic and nanotechnology technology, biological imaging, microencapsulation, and many other topics.  Students will also attend seminar-based lectures, conduct individual research, and experience a clinical component.

    Students will be compensated with a $3,000 stipend over the course of the ten-week program.

    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites  students to partake in our 2014 Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience.  This summer research program brings together underrepresented* minority undergraduate students in the STEM fields for the summer to experience laboratory research under the mentorship of premier Rensselaer faculty. 

    This eight week program is designed to help curious and solution-oriented students gain confidence in the lab, develop enthusiasm for graduate school, cultivate a professional network, and earn attractive qualifications.     The SUCCESS Program will enable students to participate in a 9‐week enriching research experience hosted by the Medical Scientist Training Program (stipend and travel allowance provided). While taking part in this program, students will take valuable professional development courses and learn from engaged mentors; all while working in state‐of‐the‐art research facilities.
     
    The SUCCESS program seeks to identify outstanding students interested in the biomedical sciences with the goal of pursuing graduate education (MD/PhD or PhD). The program seeks to enhance and foster diversity in graduate study in the biomedical and biological sciences as reflected in culture, class, race, ethnicity, background, work, and life experiences. The program especially encourages applications from African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and others whose backgrounds and experiences would bring diversity to the field.

    In partnership with some local associates, a pilot research project in the Chicago Filipino community is being launched. 

    We are seeking 1-2 college juniors/seniors who would be interested in volunteering part-time on a community research project focusing on Filipino elders. Interest in psychology, sociology, social work, or public health would be helpful. In addition, experience with data entry or audio transcription is desirable. 

    This is an unpaid volunteer position with an expected start date of mid-May 2016, and lasting through at least the end of August.

    Conduct research and earn financial support through the LASURI program!

    Are you interested in working on a real research project with a professor?  Would you like to receive financial support to do so?  Then you should apply for the Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative (LASURI).

    Applications will be accepted through March 3, 2014, so it’s time for you to start reaching out to your professors to learn more about how you might participate in a research project.  

    You can find a faculty mentor by going to the Undergraduate Research Experience website (www.ure.uic.edu ) or talking to your instructors, TAs and departmental advisors or Directors of Undergraduate Studies.

    To be eligible, you must be a full-time LAS student who will have earned at least 24 credit hours by the time you begin the research project next fall; hold a minimum 2.5 GPA and be registered for course credit during the semester(s) in which the research takes place.

    Your faculty mentor for the project must be affiliated with a department in the college and may have tenure-track, clinical, emeritus or research associate appointments. 

    Undergraduate Research Assistants can expect to spend 6-10 hours per week working on their research project.  Undergraduate Research Assistants receive a $2500 award per academic year ($1250.00 per semester), and their Faculty Mentors receive a $1500 grant for project costs.

    Students must interview with faculty and submit the completed application online by Monday, March 3, 2014.

  • Research Assistants Needed for the "Long-Term Study of Youth Mentoring"

    We are currently looking for Research Assistants to aid in the "Long-Term Study of Youth Mentoring" at the Institute for Health Research and Policy (IHRP). This study is being led by Dr. DuBois, a professor in UIC's School of Public Health (Dr. David Dubois). Dr. DuBois and his team are conducting a follow-up study of persons who participated in an evaluation of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program more than 20 years ago (LSYM).

    We are looking for Research Assistants who are interested in gaining research experience for course credit or as a volunteer during the Summer and/or Fall Semester. In addition, we have helped several Honor College Students complete their capstones during their time working with us, using data from the larger study. All Research Assistants will gain real life research experience that will help in the next step after graduation, whether that be applying for graduate school or entering the professional sector.  Dr. DuBois will be available to provide a letter of reference to facilitate these next steps. For those who continue with the project more than one semester, there will also be an opportunity to be included as a co-author on a research paper for a professional conference.

    Some of the tasks the Research Assistants will be doing are:

    Participant outreach: communication with participants from diverse backgrounds by email and phone for purposes of recruitment into the study as well as data collection.

    Data entry and management using software such as "REDCap" and Lexis Nexis

    Administrative tasks involving the use of Microsoft office

    Students who are interested must have the following qualifications:

    GPA must be above 3.0

    Willing to travel to the West Campus (IHRP)

    Minimum time commitment of 8 hours per week

    Oral and written communication: must be able to communicate effectively through email and phone

    Customer service skills and experience with Microsoft software (e.g., Excel) are a plus.

  • Summer research opportunity with UICentre Drug Discovery Initiative

    UICentre is the campus wide drug discovery initiative at UIC that coordinates teams of collaborating scientists across campus. We are looking for motivated undergraduates to work in our labs over the summer.  Projects span numerous diseases including cancer, pulmonary hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep apnea, depression, and alcoholism.  Specific work will be compatible with the individual student’s interests and talents. 

    In general, available positions include entry level lab work in cell and molecular biology, animal models, and bioanalytical chemistry.   Students must be willing to work at least 20 hrs a week.  Following a one month unpaid training period, promising students will be offered paid positions.  Interested applicants submit a brief resume/CV to drugdiscovery@uic.edu.  Include major, GPA, relevant work history and course work.
