    About the Research Fellows Program

    The ChicagoCHEC Research Fellows Program is a comprehensive learning experience for students who are planning to apply to graduate or medical school. This program is focused on the development of academic, technical, and professional skills in preparation for careers in social, behavioral, and biomedical research and in healthcare. ChicagoCHEC Research Fellows will spend the summer in seminars and research rotations learning from leading scientists.

  • Clinical Internship at Rush Midwest Orthopaedics, Apply by Sun. 8/28

    Rush Midwest Orthopaedics is looking for 1-2 committed, compassionate, and diligent pre-medical students to help us enroll patients into clinical trials. The position requires two 3-4 hours shifts per week, with at least a semester long commitment; though times are flexible, we are looking for people that can dedicate time M-F, 8:30 to noon or 1 to 3:30 PM. A mandatory research training and certification will be provided prior to the first day and a TB test is required.

    We believe that this opportunity is ideal for a pre-medical student, as it will provide constant patient interaction, as well as possible shadowing experience. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to form relationships with the physician and medical professionals at Rush.

  • Spring 2016 Internship with Chicago Public Schools

    Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is seeking interns for the Spring 2016 internship term.

    Internship opportunities are available in the Office of College and Career Success at Chicago Public Schools.  Specifically, interns would be part of a dynamic team leading a high priority initiative called the Chicago Higher Education Compact.  The Chicago Higher Education Compact is a partnership between CPS, twenty-two universities, and six advisory partners with the goal of increasing college graduation rates for CPS students to 60% by 2025.   • Amgen Scholars Program at Harvard University, Apply by Wed. Feb. 1

    Harvard University is one of ten U.S. institutions that again will be offering a ten-week Amgen Scholars Program in the summer of 2017.  The Harvard-Amgen program, with an emphasis on biotechnology research, affords a diverse cohort of rising undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work in the laboratories of faculty across the Harvard universe, including the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. In addition to an engaging, formative research experience, Harvard-Amgen Scholars will live among the 400 undergraduates residents of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village community in one of the historic Houses along the Charles River.

  • LAS 289 Fall Internship Proposal Form

    LAS 289 is a variable credit hour course.  For every 60 hours at your internship, you can earn 1 credit, 120 hours earns two credits and 180+ hours earns three credits.  There is also a monthly seminar attached to this course (syllabi attached). Ms. Robin B. Hursey will be offering the monthly seminars on Wednesday's on 9/21, 10/19 and 11/16 at 3-4:30pm OR on Thursday's on 9/22, 10/20 and11/17 at 3:30-5pm. There are only 20 seats available in each seminar, so you should submit your proposal as soon as possible.

    If you have secured a fall internship and would like to earn elective credit for your internship you will need to complete the form on-line (it must be typed), print and then call Ms. Hursey's office to schedule an appointment, 312-996-0425, for approval.

  • Summer 2016 Camp GirlForward Teaching Internship in Chicago

    GirlForward is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to empowering adolescent refugee girls who have been resettled in the U.S. We are looking for interns who can support our Camp GirlForward program this summer in both AUSTIN, TX and CHICAGO, IL! Camp GirlForward is GirlForward's academic summer program designed to meet the needs of girls with limited and interrupted educational backgrounds through instruction in various subjects, as well as enrichment activities designed to build confidence and leadership skills. Camp is built on the tenets of social justice and will involve intensives in reading, writing, and research.

    DESCRIPTION

    GirlForward is seeking a Camp GirlForward teaching intern to support our Camp GirlForward lead teacher in the classroom and during enrichment activities. This position works directly with the Camp GirlForward lead teacher, as well as with GirlForward's Program director and serves as both a teaching assistant and camp counselor.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    - assisting lead teacher with classroom management

    - assisting lead teacher with curriculum development

    - working one-on-one with girls in the classroom

    - leading small groups of girls in group discussions and activities

    - assisting with planning and coordination of field trips

    - grading assignments

  • Sens Research Foundation Summer Scholars Program in Biomedical Research, Apply by 2/6

    The SRF Summer Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as cancer and Parkinson’s Disease. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Summer Scholar is responsible for his or her own research project in such areas as genetic engineering and stem cell research. The Summer Scholars Program emphasizes development of both laboratory and communication skills to develop well-rounded future scientists, healthcare professionals, and policy makers. Students participating in the program will hone their writing skills via periodic reports, which are designed to emulate text scientists commonly must produce. At the end of the summer, students will have the opportunity to put all of their newly developed communication skills into practice at a student symposium.

  • Illinois JusticeCorps Summer Program

    As part of a new AmeriCorps award from the Serve Illinois Commission, Illinois JusticeCorps is looking for student volunteers to become AmeriCorps Members for the Summer 2014 Program.

    Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative new program to enhance access to justice for the growing number of unrepresented people in the courts by empowering and training student volunteers to help people without lawyers with the court system. Student volunteers will help people with legal questions and problems and assist them in navigating the courthouse and getting connected to legal aid resources.

    Volunteers should:
     Be outgoing with an extroverted personality
     Be willing to help strangers with problems
     Have a communication style that is clear and patient
     Be able to use active listening skills to understand what people need/want
     Be able to exhibit initiative in showing people how to solve problems
     Be responsible and dependable
     Have an interest in the legal and court system

    The position requirements:
     300-hour volunteer commitment will begin with Pre-Service Orientation on Friday, June 6, 2014.
     Members will work 35-40 hours a week, 8:00am to 4:30pm, at the Daley Center (50 W.
    Washington, Chicago, IL 60602) during June, July and August
     Attend all training sessions to learn the facts needed to give accurate information
     Be willing to work with people who are often stressed, anxious and sometimes challenging
     Conscientiously gather and submit data needed for reports
     Non-English Language proficiency a plus

  • Chicago Park District Public Service Intern, Apply by 5/30

    The Chicago Park District Office of the Inspector General is an independent office that conducts investigations, process reviews, financial and program audits, and hiring monitoring within the Chicago Park District. The Park District OIG’s mission is to promote efficiency, economy and transparency within the Park District by combatting fraud, waste, and abuse.

    The Park District OIG is seeking one to three interns to support investigative, auditing, and hiring oversight projects. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and a strong interest in public service and government accountability.

    NOTE: Applications must be submitted directly by the applicant. No second-party applications will be accepted. The Park District OIG requires that its employees be nonpartisan and free from conflicts of interest.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Open to college juniors and seniors, graduate students and law students in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited four year college or university offering a baccalaureate or graduate degree or juris doctor program. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4 point grading scale or a 3.5 on a 5 point grading scale. Applicants must submit most recent transcripts with applications. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, strong organizational and interpersonal skills are desirable.

    Research Assistant Position Starting Summer 2015

    Dr. Stewart Shankman in the Department of Psychology is looking for undergraduate research assistants to volunteer in the Chicago Lab of Emotion and Physiology. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand your research skills before applying to graduate school!

    Preference will be given 1st and 2nd years who are looking for a long-term volunteer opportunity. RA's should have flexible schedules to help with lab visits, be timely and have an interest in mood and anxiety disorders and pursuing a higher degree in Psychology.Experience using SPSS for data entry and working with participants is desired. Responsibilities of an RA include assisting graduate students with lab visits, running participants through behavioral tasks, entering data into SPSS, and generally helping around in the lab.

  • The Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship

    The Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship honors the lifelong work of the founder of Rosie’s Place, which was established in Boston 41 years ago as the first women’s shelter in the nation.

    The Fellowship is awarded annually to a woman with new ideas, talent and energy to develop and carry out a special project in New England that will improve the lives of poor and homeless women and further the mission of Rosie’s Place.

    Desired projects could include the following:    

    •  A policy initiative or campaign    

    •  A project aimed at reducing poverty and homelessness    

    •  The development and implementation of a project that fills gaps in existing services in areas such as legal advocacy, jobs or economic development housing, shelter and immigration, and in populations such as LGBT, young adults and elders

    The Fellowship is 12 months long and is awarded on a one-time basis to an eligible woman. Fellows are paid a $40,000 stipend.

    The Art Institute of Chicago has just launched a new student opportunity, the Andrew W. Mellon Summer Academy and Undergraduate Curatorial Fellowship. This program is funded by the Mellon foundation and seeks to begin to diversify the pipeline in the arts by focusing on the curatorial profession in US museums. Similar programs will take place at five partner museums across the country.     Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa seeks a paid intern for a five to six month assignment working and learning in the 35th Ward Office, ending in April or May 2017. The ideal intern should be motivated with a strong interest in municipal governance, great attention to detail, and strong interpersonal communication skills. Interns will learn about the duties and operational needs of a City of Chicago Aldermanic office, including the delivery of constituent services, casework, public policy, and the municipal legislative process.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Internship in Medical Social Sciences

    We are looking for a volunteer intern to join our research team in assisting with a research project at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Medical Social Sciences at Northwestern University. This opportunity would be a great fit for anyone interested in pursuing medical school or graduate programs in psychology, behavioral health, or public health. Through this internship, you will gain hands-on experience working with experts in the field, and you will have access to Northwestern’s state-of-the art research facilities. You will also have the chance to develop and refine your research skills.

    The study with which the intern would be assisting are part of the Biopsychosocial Mechanisms and Health Outcomes Program.  The primary project for which we currently need volunteers involves a technology-based psychosocial intervention for men with advanced prostate cancer. 

    The intern will assist with various tasks in support of the study, including:

    Reviewing patient medical records (usually electronic) Screening these records for participant eligibility Sending letters and making phone calls to recruit potential participants Conducting phone screeners potential participants Making follow-up calls Preparing study materials (i.e. paper assessment forms, saliva sample kits, etc.) Data extraction from participant medical charts Other required data entry Miscellaneous tasks as needed

    Interested individuals must commit 12 hours per week, which can be split among 2 or 3 days, depending on your schedule.  We request that you make a commitment of at least 6 months for this position. Please note that you will be working on-site in our research office, located in the Streeterville area of Chicago. Interest in psychological, social and/or medical research is preferred; prior experience working with cancer patients is ideal. Spanish language skills are also preferred but not required.      The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is pleased to announce the 2016 Introduction to Cancer Research Careers (ICRC) Program.  ICRC encourages individuals from populations underrepresented in science or financially disadvantaged backgrounds to seek internship opportunities at the NCI.  Successful ICRC applicants will take part in a 2-day sponsored campus visit to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, where they will have the opportunity to learn about the various scientist-in-training programs, participate in laboratory tours, and interview for either a summer or post-baccalaureate (1-year) internship.  Participants selected for internships will receive a monthly stipend, round-trip travel, and a summer housing subsidy.  Housing for the interns is not included, however, a list of housing resources will be provided.
