    Are you interested in a career in government or public service?  Consider applying for the McKelvie Scholarship!

    What is it?

    The McKelvie Scholarship Committee invites applications for the annual McKelvie Scholarships for Government Service. Approximately twenty awards with stipends as high as $2000 will be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students who will be full time students (twelve credit hours Fall and Spring) following receipt of the award and who are planning careers in government. The McKelvie mission is to promote and strengthen government service. This includes but is not confined to local, state, and federal government employment or careers.

    Criteria for Selection:

    Superior scholarship and academic standing   Evidence of commitment to a career in government. An illustration of past, current or future participation in government service and/or employment -- perhaps through an internship -- that is evidence of a commitment to a career in government.

    Students who plan projects early and work on them over the summer will find the application process MUCHeasier.

    What is the Fulbright grant?

    The Fulbright Scholarship sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 140 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. For a Fulbright Full Grant you put together a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require you to know the language well, others are flexible on language requirements. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

    Tell me more about the teaching grants...

    Fulbright also offers students the chance to apply to teach English.  In some countries you would teach in a high school, in others elementary and in others at the college level. Language requirements vary from country to country. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    Why should I consider it?
    The Fulbright name is well respected in the U.S. and beyond. Past scholars have considered it an experience of a lifetime. They learn about new cultures or deepen their knowledge of one they already were acquainted with. They make new friends and engage in an in-depth teaching or learning experience that gives them depth of knowledge and skills in their chosen field, and helps set the stage for greater independence in their next career move. They develop a more sophisticated understanding of their host country, the U.S. and themselves.

  • Glamour's 2015 Top 10 College Women Competition, Due 9/15

    Glamour's 2015 Top 10 College Women Competition honors the country's ten most incredible undergrads with scholarship money, a special trip to NYC, and coverage in the magazine.  Alumnae society includes power ladies ranging from Martha Stewart to Olympic swimmer Allison Schmitt.

    Nine awards of $3,000 and one grand-prize of $20,000 are given.  Open to students who will be full-time juniors in fall 2014 at a four-year college in the U.S. or Canada.

    The Mark A. Forester Scholarship is an award of $1000 for a  currently enrolled student. To enter, the student must write a 300-500-word essay explaining how they go about honoring America's military heroes.  No citizenship requirement.

    Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) program is currently soliciting applications for the Fall 2016 LARES Tuition Award. The goal for this award is to assist LARES students in obtaining a baccalaureate degree. Candidates are considered based on merit and leadership. Recipients may receive full or partial tuition waivers, depending on funds available.

    Note: Award does not cover university fees or study abroad.

  • Scholarship for Summer Study in the UK

    Thomas Gale Scholarship for Kenyan and US students

    2 awards available for current undergraduate students ordinarily resident in the US - students will be able to apply for one of our 3 week summer school courses listed here.

    The scholarship is up to the value of £3000, covering;

    + a stipend for living costs.

    This is a need based award aimed at students who would not ordinarily be able to afford to come to SOAS Academic Summer School.

    The deadline for applications is March 31st.

    SOAS is part of the University of London and was formerly known as the School of Oriental and African Studies. Their Academic Summer School offers three and five-week courses taught by SOAS' world-renowned academics.     APIASF Scholarship Program

    For Asian and/or Pacific Islander students. Must be a citizen, national, or legal permanent resident of the United States to apply and be enrolling as an undergraduate student in a U.S. accredited college or university in the Fall of 2016.   • Spring 2015 LARES Tuition Award Application, Due Fri., 11/21

    The Latin American Recruitment and Educational Services (LARES) program is currently soliciting applications for the upcoming Spring 2015 LARES Tuition Award. The goal of this award is to assist LARES students reach their goal of obtaining a baccalaureate degree. Candidates are considered based on merit including academic record and leadership. Priority will be given to students who have not received previous MAP Grant money or other agencies that cover tuition costs. Recipients will receive full or partial tuition  waivers (depending on available funds). This award does not covered university fees. Recipients are required to engage in 15 hours of volunteer work with the LARES program during the term the award is granted. The application must be submitted with all supporting documents to the LARES office (1200 W. Harrison, Suite 2640) on Friday, November 21, 2014 by 5pm.

  • Goldwater, NSF and other Science Scholarships Information Session, Tues. 9/27

    If you are interested in a career in research, you may want to consider the Goldwater and NSF scholarships. Sophomores and juniors interested in career in science, math or engineering research, should explore the Goldwater Scholarship (https://goldwater.scholarsapply.org/) ; and if you are planning on entering graduate school in in math, science engineering or ANY OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES you should consider applying for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (http://www.nsfgrfp.org/).  The Office of Special Scholarship Programs (ssp@uic.edu) can provide assistance with the application process for both of these awards and others.

    What is the Goldwater Scholarship?

    The Goldwater is a $7500 award for sophomores and juniors committed to earning PhDs or MD/PhDs in math, science or engineering. Students apply as undergraduates and the money must be used toward the following year(s)of undergraduate study. 

    What makes a good Goldwater Scholar?

    -very strong grades (3.8 or higher)

    -research experience

    -a commitment to a career in research

    What is the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program?

    The NSFGRFP is a 3 year graduate fellowship that offers partial tuition support and a $30,000 stipend to students pursuing research-based graduate degrees in math, science, engineering and most of the social sciences. Applied fields such as medicine, law, pharmacy, clinical psychology are not eligible. National NSFGRFP deadlines range between October 24 and November 3, depending on field of study.

  • US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute Award Programmes, Due 2/27 or 3/6

    Participants in the 2014 UK Fulbright Summer Institutes will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.  There are nine Summer Programmes available for US students in 2014 and candidates apply for one of their choosing.  The Summer Institute will cover the majority of the participant costs.  View the post to read more.

  • Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants, Due Mon. 2/24

    A significant advantage of being in the Honors College is access to money to support your undergraduate research. Please see your faculty research advisor right away and start now to write your applications for several grants-in-aid, which are all due Monday, February 24, 2014. All applications must be supported by a letter from the research faculty advisor.

    (1) Research grants: Many forms of scholarship are supported for up to $1,000, including senior Capstone theses, for expenditures incurred since August 19, 2013, or those anticipated for projects planned for Spring and Summer 2014 semesters. The money will fund costs associated with student research or other creative or scholarly activity (rather than, for example, student stipends).

    (2) Travel grants: Proposals will be considered for expenses associated with presentation of research at conferences (e.g., flight, hotel, poster preparation costs) up to $500.

  • Womenetics Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship Essay Competition, Due 8/23

    The Womenetics Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship (AAGS)<https://www.womenetics.com/Events/Scholarships> is a $15,000 essay competition that engages young people in pressing women's issues and connects students with thought leaders in impactful roles. The competition, sponsored by Discover, is open to all undergraduates and requires entrants to write a 2,500 word essay on one of five prompts related to business issues affecting women. Five finalists will be chosen, and of these finalists, one grand prize winner will receive $5,000 and four runners-up will receive $2,500. The five finalists will be invited to attend, expenses paid, the 2015 Womenetics Global Women's Initiative in Chicago, where the winner will be announced. Deadline for entries is August 23, 2015.     Womenetics and Discover Financial Services are offering five undergraduates a total of $15,000 through the Advancing Aspirations Global Scholarship (AAGS)<https://www.womenetics.com/Events/Scholarships>. Discussions will examine how attention by employers to the intersection between professional and personal realities is essential for companies to fully leverage diverse talent and for women in business to successfully grow and lead.

  • The Science Ambassador Scholarship

    A full tuition scholarship for a woman seeking an undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or math, funded by Cards Against Humanity.

    Scholarship funds will be provided from Cards Against Humanity’s Science Pack—a 30–card expansion pack co–authored with Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’s Zach Weinersmith and Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait.

    The winner of the Science Ambassador Scholarship will receive full tuition coverage for up to four years.

  • Honors College Study Abroad Scholarships, Due 10/24

    Thinking about studying abroad in spring 2016? The Honors College has scholarships to make your dreams a reality. Two different types of scholarships are available and the deadline for application is October 24, 2015. Start by searching for study abroad programs online at http://studyabroad.uic.edu/ and attend a First Step session http://studyabroad.uic.edu/first-steps/ to find the best program for you.

    The Dean’s Scholarship:

    The UIC Honors College offers Dean’s Scholarships for Study Abroad which are available in awards ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 for students with demonstrated financial need. To be eligible to apply for the Dean’s Scholarship for Study Abroad, students must apply to a study abroad program endorsed by the UIC Campus. A cumulative UIC grade point average of 3.40 upon application for the scholarship is also required. The application deadline for Spring 2016 is October 24th, 2015 at 5PM.     Flaherty Scholarship:

    The Honors College offers Flaherty Scholarships for study abroad. To be eligible to apply for the Flaherty Scholarship, students must apply to a study abroad program endorsed by the UIC Campus and be a member of the Honors College. A cumulative UIC grade point average of 3.40 upon application for the Flaherty Scholarship is required. The deadline for the spring 2016 scholarship is Friday, October 24, 2015.
