    Want to be a tutor in the Honors College Tutoring Center?

    Tutors must meet the following:

    o   Be a student in good standing with the Honors College

    o   Have attended UIC for at least 1 year

    o   Must be able to tutor in at least 3 different courses (you must have earned an A or B in classes taken at UIC in order to be eligible to tutor for those courses)

    o   Schedule 3 hours each week

     

    Students who intend to participate in the Honors College Tutoring program must complete an application (available in the Honors College office). The preferred deadline for applications is Tuesday, May 31, 2016; THE FINAL DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, AUGUST 19, 2016. The tutoring program is scheduled to begin on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2016. Once students have submitted an application and received confirmation of their participation in the program they should then register for HON 202 (CRN 13771). Students must be registered for HON 202 (in addition to HON 222) to count Honors College Tutoring as their honors activity. If you decide NOT to tutor, you must drop HON 202 by September 2, 2016 to avoid a “W” grade; if you drop between September 3, 2016 and October 28, 2016 you will receive a “W”. You will receive additional information about your tutoring schedule by the first week of classes in the Fall 2016 term.

    Be a Part of an Awesome Reading Program!
      

    Little Village READS is a new literacy initiative that pairs reading tutors with 1st through 3rd grade  students in the Little Village Community. All our students have been referred by their teachers for extra help outside the classroom, and they meet with tutors two days a week to work on building their reading skills. Tutors engage students in free reading, interactive games, and fun literacy activities.

    If you are interested in being a tutor we would love to hear from you! This is a great opportunity to gain some hands on experience working with an amazing group of kids.

  • Helping Hands Seeks Executive Board Members – Application Deadline: August 11

  • Honors Activity Option: Project Esteem, Meeting Mon. 2/3

    Do you enjoy working with kids? Have a passion for science? Then Project ESTEEM is right for you!

    Project ESTEEM reaches out to children currently in the children's shelter, Lydia's Home (http://www.lydiahome.org) and The Rice Child and Family Center (http://www.childrenshomeandaid.org/page.aspx?pid=350), and teaches them science through exciting experiments and projects! Volunteers from all undergraduate colleges are welcome to join; you do not necessarily have to major in science and/or education in order to be a member of Project ESTEEM, nor do you have to be a member of the Honors College. However, Honors College students do have the ability to use Project ESTEEM as an Honors College Activity.

  • Possible Service Activity for Spring: DRC Assistant for UIC Student

    The Disability Resource Center is looking for an interested and committed Honors Student to work with a student who is blind in her Spring 2016 ANTH 105 Lab course. The Honors Student would serve as the DRC student’s lab assistant  during the spring semester.  A lab assistant would assist with thevisual, written and physical aspects of each lab, including any practical exams.  The DRC student will be responsible for training the assistant and informing what tasks are needed such as describing images, or writing down specific answers. 

    The responsibilities for this activity are as follows:

    Attend all lab sessions for the class and assist the student as needed.

    The Lab meets on Mondays from 8:00-9:45 a.m. in BSB.

  • Part-Time Paid and Volunteer Tutoring Positions with Project VISION

    Project: VISION (www.projectvisionchicago.org) is a small grassroots organization serving youth age 12-18 in Chicago's Chinatown & Bridgeport neighborhoods. They are seeking both volunteer and compensated tutors for their After School Homework Tutoring Program. Tutors will assist students in grades 6-12 with homework and provide enrichment activities to help students develop academic skills and knowledge base in a variety of subjects. Each tutor will work with 4-5 students each afternoon and assist the Program Coordinator with maintaining student records. They are seeking tutors with strong personal academic records and enthusiasm and passion for teaching!

     

    Responsibilities:

    -Work under Youth Program Coordinator

    -Tutor students (grades 6-12) in various subject areas in after school homework tutoring program (answer students' questions, explain concepts, check work, help study for tests, etc.).

    -Provide enrichment activities to students.

    -Help maintain student records, attendance records, progress reports, and parent updates.

    -Volunteers must be able to commit at least 3 hours/week, and compensated tutors can work 10-20 hours per week. Shifts are available Mondays-Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays 10a-1p.

    -Must be able to commit to working at least through the end of the academic school year (6/21/16)

     

    Qualifications:

    -Must have a strong academic record and be confident with a variety of subjects through the high school levels

    -Must be especially strong in upper level math (i.e. geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus/calculus) and science (chemistry, physics) subjects

    -Experience working with youth in 12-18 age group preferred.

    -Organized, reliable, punctual, self-motivated and team player

    -Excellent communication skills

    Compensate Tutor Rate: $10/hour

    Please visit the 2017 Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards (CSSLA) site to nominate outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who have given their time and talent to campus community service. Presented awards include:

    Chancellor’s Student Service Award (for volunteer service) The Chancellor’s Student Service Award (CSSA) honors students who have made an outstanding contribution to the University through service to campus and the UIC community. Student nominees must have dedicated a significant amount of time, effort, and creativity to one or more campus- or community-based service project(s). Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students must: enrolled during the academic year in which the award is received; be in good academic standing (with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5); have volunteered in a campus and/or community service organization; and have made significant, unpaid contributions to their organization.

    Nominators should list specifics about the student’s contribution to the campus and/or community and highlight any leadership positions/offices held by the nominee. Approximately 400 UIC students receive this award each year.

    Eugertha Bates Memorial Award (for humanitarian commitment) The Eugertha Bates Memorial Award (EBMA) honors a student whose volunteer activities in a campus or community setting demonstrate an outstanding degree of caring dedication, selfless commitment, and a truly exceptional humanitarian contribution to the needs of others. Nominations for this award must include a detailed description of the uniqueness and significance of the nominee’s humanitarian service and the impact on the campus/community through his/her episodic or ongoing service.

    Jane Addams Distinguished Service Award(for creativity/innovation/length of service) The Jane Addams Distinguished Service Award honors students whose volunteer activity substantially addresses a distinct need in the community along with inspiring others to engage in volunteer service. Individual recipients must have been involved in the creation of a new project or service to address such a need, and must demonstrate the highest level of dedication and selfless commitment to volunteer service. Nominators should list specifics about the student’s contribution to the campus and/or community.

    Activities Honorary Society For the fifth year in a row, new members will be inducted into the Activities Honorary Society (AHS) during the Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards Ceremony in April. AHS recognizes no more than 15 exemplary students each year for their demonstrated student leadership. Founded in 1950 by student leaders at the University of Illinois Undergraduate Division at Navy Pier, AHS is one of two traditions remaining from the original campus.

     

    The various awards will be presented to invited recipients at the 45th Annual Chancellor’s Student Service and Leadership Awards Ceremony, scheduled for the evening of Thursday, April 20, 2017, in the Illinois Room of Student Center East.   • Dress for Success Clothing Drive

    The UIC Graduate Women in Chemistry group is partnering with Dress for Success to organize a clothing drive for the spring season of 2016! Dress for Success is a Chicago-based organization that provides "work attire" clothing to economically disadvantaged Chicago female residents currently seeking employment and for future job interviews. The link for Dress for Success can be found below along with their mission statement. This is an excellent opportunity to donate unused professional apparel to a cause that redistributes the clothes to women currently looking for jobs and cannot afford to purchase new clothes for job interviews.

    There is a box labeled "Dress for Success Clothing Drive" in the UIC Department of Chemistry office (845 West Taylor Street, Room 4500) and will be there until March 28th, 2016 that will be used to collect any unwanted professional attire. Below are the requirements for the donated clothes:

    Acceptable donations:

    ' New/gently-used professional attire; sizes 0-2 & 14 and up.

    ' Handbags/pursues.

    ' Office appropriate shoes, sizes 8 & up; wide width if available.

    ' Seasonal and transitional coats and jackets.

  • NFL Draft Volunteer Opportunity

    We are thrilled to welcome the NFL Draft back to Chicago this year. Last year we had over 650 volunteers that provided an incredible experience for over 200,000 fans. We are excited to be able to bring the NFL Draft back to Chicago for the second year in a row, and we need your help. We are looking for qualified volunteers willing to work a minimum of two shifts between Thursday, April 28th and Saturday April 30th. All volunteers must be 18 or over.

If needed, a representative from Chicago Sports Commission will reach out over the next several weeks to learn more about your skills and experience.   • New Life Volunteering Society Tutoring Recruitment

    Who: Any interested incoming and returning Honors College students
    What: Recruitment for new tutors for the New Life Volunteering Society to tutor disadvantaged Chicago public school students after school at no cost to the student being tutored.
    When: During the semester, the tutor will pick one or more of the numerous time slots available. The sessions are Monday through Friday and there are two sections each day that are each 1.5 hours long. The usual times are 4-5:30 pm or 5:30-7 pm but the tutor can adjust it to fit his or her schedule.
    Where: Burnam Hall Room 220 is where tutoring takes place during the semester.
    Why: To help promote education and improve the quality of learning for students who need it the most.

    The Julie+Michael Tracy Family Foundation/Urban Autism Solutions is looking for young, energetic students to be a part of the community of Project 1212, a new residence for young adults with disabilities in the University Village neighborhood. They are seeking students who can fill the role of mentor or community guide to a young adult with autism or related communication disability during the afternoon or weekends.
     
    Their residents travel to their health clubs, Starbucks, church and other community locations and need some initial direction and supervision. They have one or 2 residents who would also enjoy walking and running with you. The organization offers cooking classes as well as movie nights and meet-ups at Pompeii for young adults with autism, and would love to have your company.
     
    The Julie+Michael Tracy Family Foundation/Urban Autism Solutions is dedicated to addressing challenges facing young adults with autism.   • Honors Activity Option: Volunteer to be a Lab Assistant for a visually-impaired UIC student

    The UIC Disability Resource Center in need of two students (one for each class) to serve as the lab assistant for a student who is blind.  The lab assistant would be responsible for attending each weekly lab session and describing any visual aspects of the lab or completing any physical aspects of the lab the student needs assistance with.  There is no formal training needed for the position.  The student should just be a good listener, willing to help, and able to collaborate with the student to make sure that his/her needs are being met.

    Here is information on each of the labs:

    OPTION 1:PHYS 112 Astronomy and the Universe

    Duties: Lab Assistant will help a student with a visual impairment complete the PHYS 112 labs. Duties will vary depending on lab but expect to help a student with the physical and visual aspects of the astronomy labs.  The student would be responsible for informing the assistant what tasks are needed such as filling out or reading tables aloud, describing images in detail.

  • Erie READS Youth Tutor Program Seeking Volunteers

    Erie READS Youth Tutor

    Organization Description:

    Erie Neighborhood House is a community service agency founded in 1870 that promotes a just and inclusive society by strengthening the local community through skill-building, access to critical resources, advocacy and collaborative action.

    Position Responsibilities:

    Youth involved in the READS program will work one-on-one with school age students to build critical thinking and language skills. Youth and students will collaborate, reading books about social justice and community action and extending those books through art, role-play and kinetic activities. Youth will be asked to read a book out loud occasionally and must be willing to engage younger students thru conversation, art and activities.

    Youth in the program will be encouraged to bring their own ideas and activities to the program as well as any thoughts on improvement. Many of our school age students are bilingual; bilingual youth comfortable communicating in Spanish and English are welcome! Any students interested in local and historical social justice movements are encouraged to participate.

    The program will be structured thru the beginning of February, at which time youth and students will be encouraged to create their own curriculum for the remainder of the year. The Reading Specialist will be available to aide in any curricula building effort; and backup plans will be available to provide a space where creation is welcome but not mandatory.

    Preference will be given to youth who are able and willing to attend for at least one semester. Youth are encouraged to volunteer the entire school year to build relationships with students.

  • Illinois College Advising Corps (ICAC) position for May graduates, Due 3/28

    The mission of the Illinois College Advising Corps (ICAC) is to assist, educate, lead and inspire first generation, low-income, underrepresented youth in the enrollment and completion of post-secondary education. ICAC advisers are appointed to an Illinois high school and work alongside the school’s college/academic counselors. They lead senior high school students through the college application process, but more importantly, they strengthen the college-going culture at their respective high schools.

    Applicants must be recent graduates of one of the three University of Illinois campuses with a bachelor’s degree awarded in either May 2014*, December 2013, August 2013 or May 2013*August 2014 graduates are not eligible.
