  Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP) is seeking Americans (ages 18 and above) interested in serving on a voluntary basis for a year in Germany.

  People from diverse backgrounds live, work and learn together for 12 months at Holocaust memorial sites and non-profits promoting understanding and tolerance, remembering the past and taking a stand against anti-semitism, racism and discrimination today. The volunteers come from the United States, Israel, Russia and different European countries, including Germany itself. ARSP works to foster international, interreligious and intercultural dialogue and creating a more peaceful world.

  There are over 30 opportunities including framing a house, assisting at a Gala, prepping a community garden, tutoring, and volunteering at an animal shelter.   Since 1995, Toys for Tots has helped spread cheer during the holiday season through the generosity of donors. The UIC community is joining this effort by collecting toys for excited Cook County children. Please consider donating this year and brightening the life of a young child.

  New and unwrapped toys for children ages 0-13 can be dropped off at any of the collection sites on East Campus. Toys that are used or contain weapons or food cannot be accepted.

• UIC Pop-Up Pantry Available Friday; Donate Food to a Food Drive, 11/19 – 11/20

  The Wellness Center and the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) want to inform you of a new resource on campus for homeless students and low-income students aimed at combating food insecurity. The new initiative is called Pop-Up Pantry, and is it a pop-up style food pantry offering canned goods and non-perishable items to students. November 21, 2014, 2014 will be the launch of this service, and the service is available to all registered UIC students.

  Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry will deliver the keynote address at the breakfast. Harris-Perry is the Maya Angelou Presidential Chair at Wake Forest University where she serves as the executive director of the Pro-Humanitate Institute and founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center that supports research on the intersections of gender, race, and place. Harris-Perry hosted the television show "Melissa Harris-Perry" during 2012-2016 on weekend mornings on MSNBC. Her keynote will cover the topics of hope, healing, and courage.

  The Peace Breakfast will also include performances by Unity in Christ, UIC’s gospel choir and a presentation of the Martin Luther King Junior Drum Majors for Service Award to Asha Binbek. Binbek serves as the Undergraduate Student Government’s Interpersonal Relations Committee Director. She has been an instrumental force in the creation of the Arab American Cultural Center at UIC and UIC’s inaugural Global Fest – a showcase of the unique cultures comprising the university community in support of the national International Education Week efforts. The MLK Drum Major for Service award is given to those volunteers who perform extraordinary everyday acts of service with reliability and commitment but seldom receive recognition.   ADDITIONAL EVENTS
  Other events that comprise UIC’s celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this year include the Day of Service and a screening of the 2014, critically-acclaimed film Selma. Join members of the UIC Community on Monday, January 16th, at eight service sites across Chicagoland to honor the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Each community partner works to address the roots of social problems, such as poverty, racism, and further injustices. For information about each service site and to sign up before Thursday, January 12, visit go.uic.edu/mlksignup.

  The movie Selma chronicles Dr. King’s fight for the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Selma, Alabama became the epicenter of the fight for the right to vote for black citizens. Dr. King and his collaborators organized a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The film will air on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the James Stukel Towers (JST) Event Center. Admission is free with an i-card.

The Clinton Global Initiative University was created by Bill Clinton in 2007 to help you achieve realtime social impact. CGI U enables inspired undergraduate students to make meaningful change in their communities.

  Each year, CGI U convenes a meeting where students, youth organizations, and renowned experts come together to turn ideas into action. President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will host the eighth annual CGI U meeting from March 6-8, 2015 at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Every CGI U student must develop a Commitment to Action: a new, specific, and measurable plan that addresses a challenge on their campus, in the local community, or around the world. Commitments are made in CGI Us five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health. CGI U allows students with exceptional ideas to apply for grant money to make their ideas into realities.
  The 2014 conference was held on the campus of Arizona State University in Phoenix, AZ. Innovators and community contributors from all around the world came together to discuss how youth can be more impactful in their non profit commitments.

  We are currently recruiting a student in the School of Art and Design with experience in video editing to work on a project creating video testominals addressing barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV (PrEP).  Our team currently consists of three UIC medical students, one Medical School faculty member, and the staff at Project Vida, an HIV/AIDS education and direct services organization in Little Village. We have the expertise to recruit participants for the testimonials and guide testimonial content, but need to recruit a student interested in being primarily responsible for video editing.   The Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University, in partnership with Points of Light and AT&T are pleased to announce the launch of a new undergraduate certificate program, offered via distance education. The Certificate in Community-Engaged Leadership program will launch in January 2017. Thanks to the generous support of the AT&T Foundation, partial and full scholarships are now available.

  General Program Information

  Kansas State University, in partnership with Points of Light, has developed a certificate program in Community-Engaged Leadership. This program is first of its kind, offering a network of resources, consisting of academic expertise from a top land-grant university, Points of Light’s national network, and local support through community advisors. The certificate program is designed to develop community-engaged leaders, who will work to mobilize community members and local organizations, within their own communities, to make progress on complex challenges. This program was designed intentionally to keep you in the community you care about so as a student you can work to mobilize community members around environmental, social, political, and economic issues in your neighborhood.

  Theme

  The work of the 2017 inaugural cohort will be themed around education's role in strengthening democracy and developing engaged citizens. Although each participant will bring diverse interests and experiences, the theme will provide an opportunity for participants to evaluate, strategize, and make progress within the context of education. By working within this common theme, participants will contribute to the collective learning of the group while pursuing solutions to their unique challenges and focusing on their personal leadership development. For instance, while one participant in the certificate program could be engaged in environmental issues and another in food justice, both will explore and implement innovative ideas within broader theme of education.

  Ensuring equal access to the courts for individuals with language limitations is an important issue, especially in Illinois, which has a significant and growing number of people with Limited English Proficiency all across the state.  To assist the Illinois circuit courts with providing qualified interpreters, the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts (AOIC) is launching a statewide certification program for persons with native-like mastery of English and a second language which will require attendance at an orientation and passing scores on written and oral exams. The orientation sessions in October, November and December 2014 will offer information about the interpreting profession, the code of interpreter ethics and modes of interpreting. Interpreters do not need to have experience with interpreting in court to apply.

  December 13-14: Springfield, IL

Our national initiative, the Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellows Program, trains, inspires and sustains a tight-knit community of emerging leaders committed to social justice.   Become a volunteer English as a Second Language tutor at Aquinas Literacy Center! Since 1996, Aquinas Literacy Center, through English-language instruction, has enabled learners to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens.  Volunteer tutors are needed to instruct limited English proficient adult learners for 90 minutes per week at our Center, located at 3540 S Hermitage. 

  All instruction is one-on-one and training is provided.  Knowledge of a second language is not required; all instruction is in English. Join us for our two-part tutor training: Friday, January 24th (6pm - 9pm) and Saturday, January 25th (9am to 3pm). Tutors must attend both days for certification.

  The Truman is a $30,000 scholarship for juniors who are committed to careers in public service at a leadership level. Students apply during their third year and if they win, the money is applied to graduate/professional school studies.  The Truman Foundation conceives of public service broadly. It could be activism, science research, community leadership, elected office, government employment, education, policy, urban issues -the list goes on.
