  • BA in Public Health Info Sessions, Beginning Thurs. 2/13

    Information sessions for prospective applicants to the Bachelor of Arts in Public Health are offered throughout the year. Topics of the session include: overview of the public health field; general education and major course offerings; prerequisites to the major; admission requirements and application process; public health career opportunities; and time for questions and answers.

    Undergraduate Information Sessions take place in various buildings on the East Side of UIC's Campus unless otherwise noted.

  • Honors College Student Engagement Grant Available

    Will you be involved in community service or leadership activities on- or off-campus this year?  Do you have a novel idea for an innovative engagement project that will positively impact others?  Apply for an Honors College Student Engagement Grant to help you on your way.  
    Through the generosity of donors, the UIC Honors College is able to offer financial awards to encourage enriching educational experiences that complement students' academic experience.  Grants will typically be $500 or less, but students may request a higher amount when a suitable and compelling rationale is provided.  Costs that may qualify for support might include (but are not limited to): supplies for engaged activities and projects, registration fees and travel for leadership conferences, costs associated with volunteer work, costs associated with the design construction and implementation of technology aimed at solving societal problems, materials for a meaningful event, or start-up funds for a new service-oriented student organization. 
    Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the year's allotment of funding is depleted.  So the earlier you apply, the better your chances of being funded.  A link to the application can be found below:

  • Pre-Law Society Brunch, Mon. 2/17

    Why have lunch when you can brunch?!

    The Pre-Law Society invites you to have brunch with us on Monday, February 17, 2014 on the second floor of Student Center East. This event will be sponsored by and held in the UIC Student Commuter Center's multi-purpose room, from 10am to 12pm.

    Students will have the opportunity to meet the current officers serving on the PLS Executive Board, find out how to become a member, and receive an informational packet regarding upcoming PLS events for this semester.

  • Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars Plus Program, Apply by Mon. 3/3

    Illinois Institute of Technology, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law is sponsoring a Prelaw Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) Program from June 1 through June 20, 2014.   The deadline to submit the application is Monday, March 3, 2014.
     
    The PLUS program is a unique and rigorous three-week experience for current college freshmen, sophomores or juniors interested in the legal profession.  Our goal is to provide students with a “taste” of the law school experience and introduce them to the admissions process.  Students will attend classes taught by IIT Chicago-Kent law professors, recognized as some of the most productive and accomplished law professors in the nation. 
     
    The program is designed to attract disadvantaged students and those from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups.  The program will cover the cost of tuition, room in a residence hall, required course materials and other expenses.  Participants are paid a stipend to offset some of their meal and other expenses.  The program does not pay for any transportation expenses.

  • Washington Center Summer Internship Program, Apply by Mon. 2/17

    The Washington Center is looking for applicants for their summer internship program which begins on 05/28/14 and ends on 08/08/14.  The Washington Center serves students in all majors, with interests in a wide variety of fields. These include the government, nonprofit and business arenas, as well as many others that may partially overlap with them—the worlds of media and communications, science and technology, law and criminal justice, and international affairs. As interns, students will gain valuable experience, insight into possible career paths, a network of professional connections, and direction for their futures.

    One UIC student will be nominated to participate in the program. The nominated student will be expected to complete TWC’s application by 12 March.

  • 2014 Illinois African American & Latino Higher Education Alliance (IALHEA) Dialogue and Research Forum - Student Presenter Submissions Due 2/21/14

    We are pleased to announce the IALHEA Diversity Dialogue and Research Forum.   The goal is to improve opportunities for underrepresented students in Illinois institutions of higher education through networking and sharing of scholarly presentations designed to improve dissemination of research projects, teaching strategies, and service efforts.

    The 2014 Illinois African American and Latino Higher Education Alliance (IALHEA) Dialogue and Research Forum is scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2014 at UIC’s Student Center East.   The Dialogue and Research Forum also includes alumni, as guest speakers, who typically focus on issues of public policy and professional development.  There is no cost for the event and lunch is provided.  

    Undergraduate student abstracts are being accepted for this multidisciplinary research forum.  Submit your abstract today. Research poster presentations will be on Friday, April 4, 2014 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

  • Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy, Apply by 7/1

    The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals interested in the title subjects: sustainability and energy.  From August 6-20, a diverse body of participants will converge on the UIC campus and immerse itself in a broad spectrum of topics in energy and sustainable energy through daily presentations & panel discussions, collaborative research projects and mentoring, site tours of leading energy facilities in Chicago, and networking opportunities with energy & entrepreneurial leaders. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. This experience leaves graduates of the SISE program with a firm foundation for future careers in sustainability and energy, and inspires them to lead the next generation as thoughtful and informed global citizens.  Click on the post to learn more.

  • ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund 2014, Due 3/3

    The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund for the 2014-2015 academic year is now available.  The Scholarship Fund is intended to encourage racial and ethnic minority students to apply to law school and to provide financial assistance to these students.

    The Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 of financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000 during his or her time in law school. Completed scholarship applications must be received via email: legalosf@americanbar.org  no later than March 3, 2014.

    Recipients will be selected based on their qualifications for the scholarship and not on the law school they plan to attend.   • Special interactive Honors class session with Premier Researcher in Diabetes Dr. Jose Oberholzer, Wed. 2/19

    Are your classes cancelled Wednesday at 1pm?  Then don’t miss this unique opportunity for a special interactive session with Dr. Jose Oberholzer, where you will have the opportunity to brainstorm cross-disciplinary solutions to address the diabetes epidemic in our country with one of the leading researchers on this topic!  Food will be provided.

    Diabetes is a public health epidemic that involves everyone and takes leadership from all sectors to solve.  In this interactive session, you will work in groups to develop plans to address the diabetes epidemic in our country.  Dr. Oberholzer will provide you with some foundational information about diabetes, and then in groups you will choose one angle to address the issue from.  For two hours, you will take on the role of someone like the Surgeon General, the CEO of a Pharmaceutical Company, the CEO of Chicago Public Schools, head of the military, a local non-profit agency, or the head of CMS or NIH.  Together, you will come up with your plans and engage in lively discussion and dialogue about how to address this important issue!  This special seminar is open to students of all majors and academic interests.

  • 2014 Student Research Forum – Submissions Due March 24

    Are you looking for an opportunity to present your Honors Capstone project or other undergraduate research project?

    The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and the University of Illinois Alumni Association, is pleased to announce the 2014 Student Research Forum (SRF), which will be held on April 8, 2014. This important campus-wide event showcases undergraduate, graduate and professional student research covering a broad range of scholarship: Art/Design/Humanities; Business/Computer Science/Mathematics; Engineering/Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; and Social Sciences. In addition to awards in the above categories, awards will be given to the top student research projects that best reflect the principles of sustainability.

    The Chicago Humanities Festival (CHF) welcomes students and recent graduates to gain professional experience in a nonprofit cultural institution.  The CHF believes in challenging interns with relevant, interesting projects and making them full members of the Festival team.  Interns leave the CHF with a practical appreciation for the demands and rewards of nonprofit work.

  • Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience, Mon. 3/3

    Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in collaboration with the National Science Foundation (NSF) invites  students to partake in our 2014 Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Research Experience.  This summer research program brings together underrepresented* minority undergraduate students in the STEM fields for the summer to experience laboratory research under the mentorship of premier Rensselaer faculty. 

    This eight week program is designed to help curious and solution-oriented students gain confidence in the lab, develop enthusiasm for graduate school, cultivate a professional network, and earn attractive qualifications. Participants will participate in professional development activities and present their research. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in upstate New York, 110 Eighth Street, Troy, NY 12180.

  • 2014 Scholarship Association Awards, Due 2/28

    The Office of Special Scholarship Programs would like to remind you that the 2014 Scholarship Association Awards for UIC Students applications are now available!

    This year the Scholarship Association for UIC will be providing seventeen (17) scholarships for currently enrolled UIC students ranging in value from $400 to $2,000. Awards are generally for students of any major and also include recognition for academic achievement, campus and community involvement and financial need.

    We urge students to apply early in case they will be considered for an award that requires letters of recommendation! Students can apply online at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/3738012.  The deadline to apply for the SAUIC Awards is at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014.

  • Honors College Undergraduate Research Grants, Due Mon. 2/24

    A significant advantage of being in the Honors College is access to money to support your undergraduate research. Please see your faculty research advisor right away and start now to write your applications for several grants-in-aid, which are all due Monday, February 24, 2014. All applications must be supported by a letter from the research faculty advisor.

    (1) Research grants: Many forms of scholarship are supported for up to $1,000, including senior Capstone theses, for expenditures incurred since August 19, 2013, or those anticipated for projects planned for Spring and Summer 2014 semesters. The money will fund costs associated with student research or other creative or scholarly activity (rather than, for example, student stipends).

    (2) Travel grants: Proposals will be considered for expenses associated with presentation of research at conferences (e.g., flight, hotel, poster preparation costs) up to $500.

  • One-time volunteer opportunity: STEM event for middle school girls, Sat. 3/22 (Registration required)

    Are you interested in helping inspire and empower middle school girls to pursue science and math careers? Expanding Your Horizons - Chicago could use your help! We are looking for volunteers to help out at the second Expanding Your Horizons - Chicago conference on Saturday, March 22nd at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. We will need volunteers from approximately 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., but not all volunteer jobs have to last all day.  Example positions include helping with registration, setting up and assisting workshop leaders, ushering participants between locations, distributing lunch, and cleaning up facilities.  There will be a reception with food and refreshments for volunteers at the end of the day.  

    Chicago Expanding Your Horizons is a one-day conference where 200 middle school girls participate in hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math workshops. It is an exciting event for both the girls and volunteers, and we hope you will help us make this year’s conference a success! More information about the conference can be found on our website at https://sites.google.com/site/eyhchicago/.

    Volunteers will be expected to attend a mandatory orientation session the week before the conference at the University of Chicago campus.  The dates for training this year are March 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. or March 19, 2014 at 6:00 p.m.  We are trying to recruit around 50 volunteers to help the conference day run smoothly.   Are you interested?     CAURS is an annual research conference that gives undergraduate students around Chicago the opportunity to present their research in a professional yet relaxed setting. Students from all academic disciplines and all schools in the Chicagoland area are invited to submit abstracts; registration is free for DePaul University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, University of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Chicago undergraduates. All participants give a poster presentation and a number of students who wish to do so are selected to deliver an oral presentation as well.

    Lunch and dinner are provided for all student participants. In addition, CAURS features a number of informal roundtable discussions with industry representatives, graduate and professional school recruiters, and various other speakers.

    Lavender Research Forum:  Highlighting Undergraduate and Graduate LGBTQPA Research

    CALL FOR STUDENT PAPERS

    The UIC Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer People and Allies (LGBTQPA) Issues is accepting submissions for student research papers to be presented at the Lavender Research Forum on Monday, April 14, 2014 on the UIC Campus. Papers submitted for consideration should examine topics pertaining to LGBTQPA people, straight allies, and intersex people and communities. All applicants will be notified by March 10 if they have been selected to present at the Forum.

    Awards: In addition to selection for presentation, the two papers most highly rated by the committee will be awarded monetary prizes: 1st prize: $200,  2nd Prize: $100.                 

    Selection will be made by a review committee who will not know the paper’s author(s).

    Rules for the 2014 Paper Competition

    1.     Author(s) must be enrolled as undergraduate or graduate students at UIC
    2.     Paper may have more than one author but all authors must be UIC students
    3.     Author(s) can only submit one paper for consideration
    4.     Original research must have IRB approval
    5.     All authors must be available to present their work at the Forum
    6.     The submission must follow the following format and content guidelines
      1.     10 pages maximum single space including references and appendices

    The Bronzeville series is a part of Migration and Transformation, an overarching project of the Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change, that highlights the different migration experiences of people living in the US and how this shapes their identities and sense of belonging in our society.

Among her accomplishments, she has launched two microloan programs with a pool of nearly $1 million in loans.  Emilia is well-known for her contributions to leading civic and professional organizations, including the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago.

    The Office of Social Science Research is seeking a student to work on a research project that explores the benefits students receive when they participate in independent and faculty led research projects. This collection of information is the first step in a larger research project to better understand the relationship of student participation in research to retention.  

    Participating in this project will help the student develop research skills in preparation for their Capstone projects. The research skills the student is expected to learn include utilizing scholarly databases and other research resources when searching for studies related to the area of interest. In addition, students will assist in the coding of relevant material from the retrieved studies in order to contribute to the development of a database. Finally, students will further develop their critical thinking and analysis skills as they learn to discern studies that are relevant and appropriate for inclusion and which to exclude as not related.   • LAS Paid Undergraduate Research Opportunities (LASURI), Apply by Mon. 3/3

    Conduct research and earn financial support through the LASURI program!

    Are you interested in working on a real research project with a professor?  Would you like to receive financial support to do so?  Then you should apply for the Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Initiative (LASURI).

    Applications will be accepted through March 3, 2014, so it’s time for you to start reaching out to your professors to learn more about how you might participate in a research project.  

    You can find a faculty mentor by going to the Undergraduate Research Experience website (www.ure.uic.edu ) or talking to your instructors, TAs and departmental advisors or Directors of Undergraduate Studies.

    To be eligible, you must be a full-time LAS student who will have earned at least 24 credit hours by the time you begin the research project next fall; hold a minimum 2.5 GPA and be registered for course credit during the semester(s) in which the research takes place.

    Your faculty mentor for the project must be affiliated with a department in the college and may have tenure-track, clinical, emeritus or research associate appointments. 

    Undergraduate Research Assistants can expect to spend 6-10 hours per week working on their research project.  Undergraduate Research Assistants receive a $2500 award per academic year ($1250.00 per semester), and their Faculty Mentors receive a $1500 grant for project costs.

    Students must interview with faculty and submit the completed application online by Monday, March 3, 2014.
