  • Honors Summer Housing Scholarship Due Mon. 5/5

We are pleased to announce that the Honors College is able to offer a limited number of Honors Summer Housing Scholarships on a competitive basis. These housing scholarships will cover the cost of a double room in either TBH or MRH (apartment-style housing on the South Campus) for the period of the eight-week summer session (June 16-August 8, 2014). There are no regular dining services during the summer, so the housing scholarship recipients will need to provide for their own meals. In order to qualify, applicants must be engaged in either a UIC summer course(s) or faculty-supervised research on our campus.

To apply, please write a personal statement of up to 1 page (double spaced) in which you explain what you will be doing during the period of the 8-week summer session and its relevance for your academic or pre-professional goals. Please also attach supporting documentation. (For example, if you are taking a class, attach a copy of your enrollment verification. If you are doing faculty supervised research, attach the email or other agreement that verifies the arrangement (this could be an email already exchanged, or a short email for this specific purpose).) Feel free to include in your statement any additional personal or financial information that might be relevant to the Honors College when selecting those most deserving of a summer housing scholarship.

Hurry: applications are due immediately! Email the application to Associate Dean Sara Hall at sahall@uic.edu by 8 am on Monday, May 5th. Use the subject line: SUMMER HOUSING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION.

This scholarship only covers housing and does NOT cover the cost of food, or tuition for enrollment in a course, or transportation to research sites, or research supplies, etc.

Students receiving this scholarship will be expected to give back to the community of the Honors College and UIC Summer College by helping welcome students and prepare welcoming materials on select dates in July and early August, barring conflicts with class and research schedules.

The Honors College at the University of Illinois at Chicago is pleased to announce a partnership with the Chicago-Kent College of Law that will provide guaranteed seats for UIC graduates in the law school. This Guaranteed Professional Program Admission initiative (GPPA) will join 23 other GPPA programs in 11 colleges that allow new first year students to be admitted to UIC with guaranteed admission to one of several graduate and professional degree programs. For the first time, however, the GPPA Chicago-Kent College of Law program will also extend admission to current undergraduate students.

Specifically, starting in the 2014-2015 academic year, the Honors College's Guaranteed Professional Program Admission initiative will offer sophomore entry to the program. For this first year only, we will offer a special fall entry for current sophomores (future deadlines will be in the summer).

UIC sophomores currently in their 3rd semester of study at UIC can apply by December 15, 2014 at https://uofi.uic.edu/fb/sec/1081171

Students in the program must complete a bachelor's degree at UIC prior to entering the Chicago-Kent College of Law.

The IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law's history dates to 1888. The law school developed from the merger of the Chicago College of Law and the Kent College of Law. A 1969 merger made it part of the Illinois Institute of Technology. The law school has earned many accolades including being ranked 6th nationally in Trial Advocacy and 10th in Intellectual Property by U.S. News & World Report (March 2014). It is also considered a Best Value private law school by the National Jurist (October 2013), and its faculty ranks 52nd in the nation based on scholarly impact (Sisk et al., 2012). The bar passage rate for Chicago-Kent law graduates in 2013 was 93%.

We are excited to offer this prestigious pathway to a career in law to our students.

  • OSSP NEEDS YOUR HELP! Test their new Online Scholarship Management System

The Office of Special Scholarship Programs is launching a new system that will allow you to apply for all UIC scholarships through the same portal! Before that happens we need your help in testing the system.

We would appreciate your taking the time to log into the system at uic.academicworks.com, and going through the application processes. All of the opportunities you’ll find in the system are currently for TEST PURPOSES ONLY; these are not actual live scholarship opportunities. We are asking you to go through the system so that, once the opportunities do become live, it will be as smooth a process for you as possible. Please take a moment between now and the end of the day on Wednesday, June 10 to browse through the system at uic.academicworks.com and let us know about any problems or difficulties you come across. You can use the form located at https://uic.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_efc2tdxwOCDPONn to share any comments or concerns.

  • A thank you to Dean Bottoms

During six years as dean and one year as interim dean, Bette L. Bottoms, Dean of the Honors College and Professor of Psychology, has led phenomenal growth and change in the Honors College, positioning it as a national leader in honors education and a campus model for student success. It is therefore with reluctance that I write to announce that she has decided to leave the dean position effective August 1 to continue her role as a faculty member...  (Click on the post to read more.)

  • Interim Dean of the Honors College Announced

    OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

    Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

I am pleased to announce that Professor Ralph Keen will become Interim Dean of the Honors College, effective August 16, 2015, subject to approval by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Dr. Keen is currently Professor in the Department of History and he has held the prestigious title of Arthur J. Schmitt Chair of Catholic Studies since arriving at UIC in 2010. This appointment follows the decision of the current dean, Professor Bette L. Bottoms, to return to the faculty after an illustrious six years as dean and one year as interim dean. A search for a permanent dean will commence this coming academic year.

The Honors College is a national model for honors education in urban public research universities. Professor Keen has been involved with the college since his arrival at UIC, as a fellow and as a member of the Honors Council, of which he was co-chair in 2014-15. As a member of the college strategic planning committee (2011-12) and diversity committee (2013-14), and as co-chair of the 2013-14 fifth-year review of the dean, Professor Keen became familiar with every aspect of the college’s operations.

Prior to UIC, Professor Keen was Assistant and then Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, where he was also involved in the University Honors Program. A renowned historian of early-modern religious thought, Professor Keen served as executive officer of UIC’s Religious Studies program in 2014-15. He is the author of two monographs and a textbook as well as editor or translator of five other books, and he is currently completing a monograph on the uses of the idea of divine wrath in religious polemics from Martin Luther to Jonathan Edwards. He is an editor of the monograph series Catholic Christendom 1300-1700 published in the UK by Ashgate, and serves on the boards of the American Catholic Historical Association and the Society for Reformation Research as well as the finance committee (of which he was the founding chair) of the American Society of Church History.

Please join me in welcoming Professor Keen to his new role on campus.

    Sincerely,

Eric A. Gislason Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost

  • Fulbright Student Award and Schwarzman Scholarship (Teach, Research, or Study Abroad after graduation!), Info Session 9/3, Application Deadline 9/11

As the fall term begins, it's time to think about applying for the Fulbright Student Award and the Schwarzman Scholarship! Both of these awards provide exciting opportunities for going abroad to further your education.  They both seek high achieving, highly motivated students.

There is a Fulbright and Schwarzman information session on Thursday, Sept. 3 at noon in 850 UH or you can follow up with one of our staff (below) if you have questions.

    The Fulbright Student Award
The Fulbright sends students abroad to do a program of study or research in one of around 160 countries OR to teach English for a year in one of over 50 countries. You must have your bachelor's degree before you leave, but you can apply at any point in your life once you have that first degree. The UIC campus deadline is Sept. 11. There is still time to apply! You can find detailed information about the Fulbright at http://us.fulbrightonline.org/fulbright-us-student-program

    Fulbright Study/Research Grant
You put together a proposal of study or research that would take 10-12 months to perform. Some countries require you to know the language well, others are flexible. Programs of study can include classes, research projects, library work, observations, training in the creative arts, surveys, lab work - in short, anything that would help you study or learn more about your proposed topic.

    The English Teaching Assistantship
Fulbright also offers students the chance to teach English.  Options exist at the high school, elementary and the college level. Many countries have no language requirement. The English Teaching Assistants (ETA) are generally students who have some teaching experience, and believe that the ETA experience will help to prepare them for what they are doing in the future.

    The Schwarzman Scholarship
The Schwarzman offers a select group of students the opportunity to earn a one year master’s degree at Tsinghua University in China. Candidates need not be Chinese speakers. Strong candidates will have excellent academic qualifications and an interest in learning about China as well as leadership experience. Enrolled students must be nominated by UIC. UIC’s campus deadline is Sept 14. There is still time to apply! You can find detailed information at http://schwarzmanscholars.org/

    How can I apply?

If students are interested in any of the awards listed, they should reach out to OSSP staff immediately. Current seniors and alumni are all welcome.
