Part of the success of the Writing Center is the result of having a diverse staff of tutors from a variety of majors, linguistic backgrounds, and racial, ethnic, and gender identities.
We are looking for students who are engaged by writing and also respectful of their peers. To be tutors, students need to be at least sophomores who have completed their First Year Writing requirement (or the equivalent transfer credit) with a high grade.
All tutors begin by taking a tutor training and advanced writing course called English 222 (offered every semester, including in the Summer). In the course, students both tutor and attend class, where they analyze writing expectations across the disciplines, study the different ways people become successful as writers, and assess their tutoring by analyzing transcripts of their tutoring sessions. Once students complete the course, they are eligible to apply for a paid staff position, which they can begin the following semester.
All students and faculty are welcome to drop by the Writing Center at any time to find out more about our work.
