Dear pre-law students,
I am a UIC alum who graduated in 2007. Since graduating, I eventually went to law school and I'm currently working in Professor Daniel Coyne's criminal defense clinic at Chicago-Kent College of Law (Professor Coyne is likewise a UIC alum). In the clinic, we represent individuals accused of crimes primarily in Chicago. Outside of the clinic, Professor Coyne teaches a criminal litigation class that conducts a mock trial at the end of each semester.
In the past, the trial has involved testimony on forensic entomology (pioneered by UIC's own Professor Bernard Greenberg). Other issues that may come up in the end of semester mock trials include DNA profiling, fingerprinting, the psychology and reliability of eyewitness identifications, cause of death / time of death issues, gunshot residue, forensic forearm/toolmarks examination, and credibility issues involving testifying co-defendants.
We are seeking students to act as jurors for the trial. I thought that participating in the trial as jurors might be of some interest to pre-law students.
The trial is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 8am to 5pm in the Marovitz Courtroom at Chicago-Kent College of Law, 565 W. Adams St., Chicago, Illinois. We are conveniently located near UIC and the Union and Ogilvie Stations. We will be catering lunch from Giordano's for all students who volunteer as jurors. We will endeavor to have as close to a real experience as possible for the jurors, including deliberation on guilt at the conclusion of the trial.
