WHO ARE HONORS AMBASSADORS?
Honors Ambassadors are Honors College students who take a leadership role by helping recruit and welcome new students into UIC and the Honors College. Honors Ambassadors assist new students joining the Honors College in their transition to the university and the Honors College community. This can include new first-year students, new transfer students, or current UIC students who are new to the Honors College. Honors Ambassadors will commit to their role from May 2018 through May 2019.
WHAT DO HONORS AMBASSADORS DO?
Each Honors Ambassador will serve as a resource for incoming first-year and new students to the Honors College. Ambassadors will not be assigned to a specific group of students, but will assist the new class of Honors students as a whole with the adjustment to UIC and the Honors College. Throughout the summer, Ambassadors are expected to do outreach to new students and attend at least two Transfer / Continuing Student Orientation sessions to meet new students and answer their questions. Ambassadors are also required to attend the First-Year Retreat on Friday, August 24, 2018 to meet and welcome new students.
For the Fall and Spring semesters, Ambassadors will be involved in a variety of activities to help new students adjust to UIC and the Honors College, including leading start-of-semester events, speaking to HON 101 Freshman Orientation Seminars about relevant topics, volunteering at Honors College admissions recruitment and interview events, organizing events to welcome new students and build community, and performing additional outreach to prospective and new students.
Honors Ambassadors will be expected to attend periodic trainings, events, and meetings during Summer 2018, Fall 2018, and Spring 2019. This includes an on-campus training on the week of May 21; attending at least two Transfer / Continuing Student Orientation sessions during June, July, and/or August; and, attending the Honors College First-Year Retreat on Friday, August 24, 2018.
WHAT CAN I GAIN FROM BECOMING AN HONORS AMBASSADOR?
Honors Ambassadors can receive Honors Activity (HON 222) credit (e.g., 1 Honors Unit) in Fall 2018 or Spring 2019 for their work, as long as they complete 45 hours of service in the role. Ambassadors will also gain leadership, mentoring, and public speaking skills from their work, as well as the opportunity to build connections with Honors College staff and faculty.
