"Food for All People: Challenges Women with Disabilities Face When Claiming their Human Right to Food"

The struggle to secure all human rights is intimately tied to the right to food. Simply put: people must eat to live. Though many international human rights organizations recognize and work to eliminate the unique political and social barriers that women face compared to men when accessing food, they leave women with disabilities (and often disabled people in general) out of critical discussions on food. In an attempt to include disabled women in conversations about food systems, this talk will outline all that the human right to food entails and the multifaceted barriers women with disabilities must overcome to gain sustained access to sufficient nutritious food.
Mariel Rancel is a senior at UIC majoring in Biology with minors in Nutrition and Disability and Human Development. As a 2016-17 Urban Public Policy Fellow, she has interned at Catholic Charities of Chicago’s Nutrition Services Department. In the summer of 2017 she studied global food security, nutrition, and sustainable development in Geneva, Switzerland. She is a dedicated chemistry tutor and hopes to become a science teacher and researcher in the future. As a disabled Puerto Rican woman, she plans to write science curriculum sensitive to diverse students, especially those with disabilities.

This program is part of the FEMINISMS Lunch Lecture Series where we explore, discuss and highlight feminisms and examine them within various cultural locations and contexts. This series creates a safe space to explore the varied and complex realms of feminism. Guest presenters open up opportunities and guide us as we delve deeper into and broaden our understanding of this complex and multifarious movement while expanding the conversation about what it means to be a feminist.
