An undergraduate laboratory aide position in the Department of Biological Sciences at UIC is available for first- or second-year Honors College students beginning in October 2017. The lab is located at MBRB on the west campus.
Job description of the undergraduate laboratory aide position (more a technician position than a research position):
Major duty-
- Prepare growth media of worms and bacteria
Other occasional duties-
- Wash glassware and plasticware
- Maintain the worm strain collection in the -80 freezers
- Update the strain database using the FileMaker software
The lab is seeking an energetic and highly motivated FIRST- or SECOND- year undergraduate student with a major in life science and commitment to this position for at least 2 years (since training takes time and effort). Completion of introductory chemistry and biology courses is preferred. The successful applicant will work in a very stimulating academic and cultural environment. This position will have a flexible work schedule that depends on her or his school schedule and can work between 5-20 hours per week that may be extended during summer.
We are interested in understanding how sensory diversity of the nervous system is generated using the small roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans as an experimental organism. To learn more about the lab, see https://sites.google.com/site/chioufenchuanglab/home. Although the position may not have the opportunity to directly participate in the research due to limited work hours during spring/fall semesters, the student will have the privilege to observe our research and interact with actual scientists in an actual research lab. The position would have the opportunity to directly participate in research in addition to the major duty when the work hours are extended during summer.
Interested persons should send a resume including GPA and the names of one-two references to Professor Chiou-Fen Chuang at chioufen@uic.edu.
