It isn't too late to participate in LeadershipUIC, a year-long program that connects undergraduate UIC students in their final year with prominent community and business leaders. Students in the program work to create a final project to benefit the UIC community, and they also clarify their own mission, vision, values, and definitions of leadership while beginning to search for careers and preparing for future leadership positions. Students from all majors are welcome to apply—there are no specific prerequisites for this program, other than a desire to join in this fall, and a planned graduation date of Spring 2023.
LeadershipUIC is a year-long capstone program, in which small groups of students work together to research—and propose changes or solutions to—an issue that affects UIC. Issues are identified in one of the first LeadershipUIC sessions, and groups then independently take on the project work throughout the academic year. Monthly sessions are focused on hearing from business/community leaders and participating in developmental workshops. The final LeadershipUIC session involves presenting the issue, research, and suggestions to an audience of UIC administrators and stakeholders.
Honors students who choose to fulfill their Capstone requirement with LeadershipUIC also create and submit a written document for the Honors College. This might, for instance, be a literature review based on early stages of research the groups conduct, and also would likely include the need to complete a brief scholarly report highlighting individual contributions to a group project. An SLCE staff member would serve as your Capstone Supervisor. Naturally, you will consult with your faculty fellow as part of the planning process.
This year’s deadline has been extended! Applications close on Friday, October 7, 2022, and participants will be selected no later than Wednesday, October 12th. The first session will be Friday, October 21. Find out more and apply at https://slce.uic.edu/leadership/leadershipuic/!
