In 1945, Navy Pier opened its doors to veterans returning from World War II. Today as the University of Illinois at Chicago, we reflect upon Veterans Day, let us not only remember our past but also appreciate and recognize our current veterans on campus who sit in our classrooms, teach our courses and serve our students. The UIC Veterans Day Planning Committee offers a collection of activities designed to educate, enlighten and honor veterans beginning on November 5, 2016. All members of the campus community are invited to participate in the following events:
UIC Veteran 3K Walk/5K Run Fundraiser

The Veterans Day 3K Walk/5K Run has been organized to honor those who have served while creating awareness for the veteran community. Proceeds from the race will go towards programs and initiatives that support the student veteran community. The route will have participants passing through much of UIC’s campus. Students, faculty, and staff can either participate in the race or volunteer to help coordinate the event. "Things We Carried" Military Exhibit

This exhibit is coordinated by Student Veterans Association. The pieces displayed will be items carried or photos taken by student veterans during their time in service. At the noon hour on Tuesday and Wednesday, a Lunch and Learn program about veterans and their experiences will occur in the Commuter Student Resource Center. Light refreshments served.

Guest Speaker: Susan Sacharski
Sue Sacharski, Archivist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, will talk about the first, little known, US casualties of the First World War. Two Chicago-area nurses were killed and one injured through "friendly fire" as they travelled to France on the USS Mongolia in early 1917. Join us for this free event supported by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s week long Veteran’s day programming. The program will be followed by a reception.

Guest Speaker: Melissa Stockwell, Bronze Medalist 2016 Rio Paralympics
Melissa Stockwell is an American para-triathlete, former swimmer, and U.S. Army officer. As a first lieutenant, she was the first female soldier to lose a limb in the Iraq War. She lost her left leg when a roadside bomb exploded while she was leading a convoy in Baghdad. For her service in Iraq, she was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Stockwell is the reigning two-time Para-triathlon World Champion in the Tri 2 classification for 2011 and 2012. She subsequently became the first Iraq veteran chosen for the Paralympics in 2008. She competed internationally in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was the Bronze Medal Winner in the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio.
