What is the Graduate-Student-At-Large (GSAL) program?
-GSAL students enroll in regular graduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Chicago. They may take courses at the College, in the Graduate Divisions of the Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities, and at the graduate schools in Divinity, Public Policy, Social Work, Business, and Law. Some stay for only a single quarter; others stay for an entire academic year or longer.
-GSAL students come to the University of Chicago in order to build on their undergraduate studies, while other students use the program to explore different disciplines beyond their college majors.
-GSAL students will receive a University of Chicago transcript with grades, and might also receive letters of recommendation from faculty members who have worked with them. These efforts result in a more competitive application to graduate school.
-GSAL students take advantage of in-depth academic advising, student success skills workshops and resources for graduate school applications or career planning.
Who will benefit from the GSAL program?
-Graduating seniors or recent graduates who are still unsure about which field of graduate study to pursue are encouraged to connect with us soon, so that we can help them navigate the course selection at the University of Chicago (timeschedules.uchicago.edu) and support their exploration of courses and fields of subject interest, before they apply to graduate or professional schools.
-For students or alums who feel they would like to focus more into a field of study and gain additional course and research training, or take more courses in a new field of study to switch interest fields in graduate school, we will be able to help them enroll in appropriate courses, build professional relationships with faculty mentors, engage in research, and provide supportive advising guidance and resources for successful graduate school applications.
Important GSAL Admissions Considerations
