The announcement from the federal SEVP on July 6th that enforced an in-person presence in class during a pandemic and at a time when colleges are considering online or hybrid instruction threatened to shatter the academic, professional and financial landscape of international students and scholars. Too often, international and immigrant populations endure marginalization and await the courts to put forth regulations that impact the legitimacy of their existence. Although this regulation was rescinded on July 14th, the psychological shock and pain to the international communities remains fresh. The Counseling Center staff and the Undergraduate Student Government invite international students and scholars, and faculty and staff who work with international students, to a space to talk about the wide range of emotional, academic and professional impact, and to discuss actionable ways to support and advocate for our international communities at UIC. Your stories and ideas can contribute to our recommendations in supporting international communities.
