African Film Society is a new UIC student organization that seeks to combat the powerful cultural imperialism that negatively distorts African diasporic representation in modern-day media. Through regular film screenings and subsequent dialogue, we seek to counteract the stereotypical, prevailing narratives in film that misrepresent Africans of American, Caribbean, Latin American, European, and African nationalities.
This academic year, we will be hosting asynchronous, remote events online surrounding our film titles, all of which are available for free on the Internet. Any student at UIC is welcome to join us! Our first event will begin in early September. It is critical to be a part of our mailing list to gain access to our private discussion forum and our monthly film titles!
