This year, the African American Cultural Center celebrates 30 years at UIC! As we look forward, we want to move forward as well. The AACC is considering an important change – renaming the center the Black Cultural Center. Why? you might ask. The purpose of our cultural center is to provide a place for all UIC students, staff and faculty to gather, learn and share, and to explore the diverse histories and traditions of people of African descent from around the world.
In the spirit of embracing all of who we are as a community at UIC, we propose a change to the more expansive, inclusive, and global term “Black.” We hope you agree that this shift will reflect a truly diasporic vision for the Center, one that has existed in fact, but that will now be in our name as well.
What are your thoughts on this renaming? Please take a moment to answer a few questions. Your reflections on the significance of the Center’s name will help us as we contemplate this important change.
