Researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health will be testing water samples from Chicago’s beaches, seven days per week, this upcoming beach season (Summer 2023). Two types of positions are available, and qualified applicants can be hired for both positions. Hourly salary will be based on the UIC undergraduate/graduate salary schedule. Employees must be willing to work on average one weekend shift per week and two weekends per month. Employees must be highly dependable, able to work under time pressure, and they will work closely with other members of the research team. Both positions will begin at the end of the Spring semester (May 15, 2023) and end on Labor Day (September 4, 2023).
Water Sampling Technician
Water sampling technicians will drive to approximately 5-6 beaches and collect water samples following a research protocol. Water samples will be collected and delivered to the UIC School of Public Health Water Microbiology Laboratory (2121 W. Taylor Street) for analysis. Th is will involve a total of 10-20 miles of driving per day. Technicians will begin work at approximately 5:30 AM (sunrise), and finish at approximately 8:00 AM. In addition to the hourly salary, water-sampling technicians will also be paid for miles driven at the UIC mileage rate.
Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in a UIC undergraduate or graduate degree program. Successful applicants must have their own vehicle, valid driver's license, auto insurance, and a good driving record.
Water Microbiology Laboratory Technician
Laboratory technicians will process water samples and conduct preliminary water quality analysis. This work will take place from 7:30 AM-11:30 AM.
Qualifications: Students must be enrolled in a UIC undergraduate or graduate degree program. The ideal candidate would have prior biology or chemistry laboratory course work.
