2015 Women’s Heritage Month Celebration at UIC
“Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives”
The goal of our annual Women’s Heritage Month (WHM) celebration at UIC is to promote activities and lectures that engage and inform our community about the diverse roles and unique contributions of women in our community. A variety of departments and organizations throughout the UIC campus community are hosting a month long array of programs and events that have a strong common thread: they delve into and celebrate the lives and impact of women from a diversity of communities and cultures. This year the Women’s Leadership & Resource Center will be focusing its WHM programming around issues of reproductive justice and abortion rights.
By centering UIC faculty, staff & student research and community involvement in this month-long program, we hope to provide a unified voice sharing Women’s Heritage Month activities and events to the campus community and beyond. Come join us!
Be sure to check out all the wonderful events scheduled for this week of Women's Heritage Month and the weeks ahead at http://womenslrc.uic.edu/womens-heritage-month/.

The Violence of Low-Wage Temporary Staffing Work
Part of the REAL TALK – A BROWN BAG SERIES
Thursday March 5th
12:30 - 1:30 PM
1550 University Hall
Low-wage temporary staffing work is a growing sector that utilizes and contributes to poverty and structural and interpersonal violence. Through poverty wages, wage theft, rampant health and safety violations, racial and immigration based discrimination, interaction with the immigration detention and prison industrial complexes, and sexual harassment and assault, this sector and their client companies profit through the use of power and control dynamics similar to that seen in interpersonal and family violence.
In addition to this violence in the work place, the exploitation in this labor market sector further marginalizes women, people of color and immigrants from social and financial security and inclusion in their community and personal lives.
Lunch will be provided. RSVP with subject: “Real Talk RSVP” to dcairo2@uic.edu
Hosted by the Campus Advocacy Network (CAN), Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) and Movement Against Sexual Violence (MASV). Throughout the series, we examine various social justice issues through the lens of interpersonal violence. We hope to inspire connections – not only between ideas and movements – but also between people who are social justice agents of change.
