Undergraduate Judicial Externship - Cook County Circuit Court, Mortgage Foreclosure Division
Student externs in the Cook County Circuit Court, Mortgage Foreclosure Division are an essential part of keeping the Court system functioning smoothly. The primary responsibility of our externs is to assist the Court by reading and reviewing motion packets and other documents which are submitted to the Court to be heard by the Judge. Students will be trained by the Judge’s Law Clerk, and their work will be reviewed personally by the Judge and used on a regular basis during Court proceedings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Senior and junior level pre-law students.
- At least a 3.7 G.P.A.
-Students will be given preference by seniority and academic credentials
Basic Skills and Abilities Required:
-Students must have a strong work ethic, integrity, and professionalism
- Students must be able to handle and review a large volume of documents while paying attention to detail
Compensation
This position is unpaid. This position may be used for school credit, if applicable, under University rules.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Law Clerk, the student extern will be required to conduct various tasks, which may include, but is not limited to:
(1) reviewing mortgage foreclosure default judgment packets;
(2) reviewing motions to confirm judicial sale;
(3) assisting to organize the court call and manage the court’s docket;
(4) conduct background, topical research.
All hours must be completed at the Richard J. Daley Center at 50 W. Washington, Chicago, IL. Student externs will have opportunities to observe court proceedings, and will have direct feedback on their work from the Judge and his Law Clerk.
Any extern with the court will be subject to a background check by Cook County prior to beginning the position.
