The Clara Marie Paetz Pearce Family Scholarship was established in the Honors College through the generosity of her family. This scholarship is awarded each spring to an Honors student pursuing a nursing degree at UIC who is both high achieving and in need of financial assistance. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded. Clara Pearce was born on a farm in Mecklenburg County, Virginia in 1900. She attended a one-room school near her home, then received nursing training at Halcyon Hospital in South Boston, Virginia. She returned home and worked with local doctors to care for patients in their homes. She was among the first in the county to own a car, driving her Model T Ford to visit the sick and mothers with new babies. Clara’s two daughters, Bertha Bottoms and Marie Stone, and her granddaughter Dana Ezell, also became nurses. Her granddaughter Bette L. Bottoms is Dean of the UIC Honors College.
